How to Prepare Your Property for an Edmonton Winter

From marking driveway edges to booking your snow contract early, here is how to get ready before the first big snowfall.

In the Edmonton region, the first snow can arrive as early as October, and it often sticks around until April. A little preparation in the fall makes winter safer, easier and cheaper to manage. Here is a simple checklist to work through before the first big storm.

1. Book your snow removal early

Snow removal companies fill their routes in the fall. Booking a seasonal contract in September or October puts your property on the schedule before the first storm, so you are not scrambling to find help when the snow is already piled up.

2. Mark your driveway and walkway edges

Once everything is white, it is hard to see where the driveway ends and the lawn begins. Driveway markers or stakes along the edges help protect your grass, garden beds and curbs from shovels and plows.

3. Clear the yard before the snow flies

  • Rake and remove leaves so they do not cause snow mold on your lawn.
  • Put away hoses, patio furniture and decorations.
  • Move anything that could be hidden and damaged under the snow.

4. Check drainage and downspouts

Make sure downspouts point away from your foundation and are free of leaves. During winter thaws and the spring melt, water needs somewhere to go. Poor drainage can lead to ice build-up on walkways and driveways.

5. Plan for ice control

Ice is often more dangerous than snow. Decide whether you want salt, sand or a mix, and keep a supply on hand or include ice control in your snow contract. For businesses, regular ice control is an important part of keeping customers and staff safe.

6. Know your sidewalk rules

The City of Edmonton requires property owners to clear snow and ice from public sidewalks next to their property within 48 hours after a snowfall ends. Other communities set their own rules, so check with your local municipality. A seasonal contract is an easy way to stay on top of it.

JSC Tip

Ask about combining your fall clean-up with a winter snow contract. One booking gets your yard ready for winter and keeps it clear all season.
