Winter Safety Checklist for Commercial Properties

Keep customers, tenants and staff safe this winter with this simple checklist for business owners and property managers.

For business owners and property managers, snow and ice are more than an inconvenience. Slippery entrances and parking lots put people at risk and can affect your business. This checklist will help you stay ahead of winter.

Before the season starts

  • Book your snow removal contract early.
  • Walk the property and mark curbs, islands, fire hydrants and drains.
  • Agree on clearing priorities, such as entrances, accessible parking stalls and emergency exits.
  • Decide where plowed snow will be piled so it does not block sightlines or drainage.

During the season

  • Keep entrances, walkways and ramps clear and treated for ice.
  • Watch for freeze and thaw cycles, when meltwater can turn to ice overnight.
  • Use entrance mats to reduce slippery floors indoors.
  • Check parking lot lighting so hazards are easy to see.

Keep good records

Keep a simple record of when your property was cleared and treated. If a slip and fall claim ever comes up, clear service records can be very helpful. Ask your snow removal provider what records they can share with you.

Plan for big storms

Heavy snowfalls may require snow hauling to keep your lot usable. Talk with your contractor ahead of time about how large storms will be handled, so there are no surprises.
