Alberta summers are short, so your lawn has a limited window to grow strong. One of the best ways to help it is also one of the simplest: mowing on a regular weekly schedule.
Follow the one-third rule
Never cut off more than one third of the grass blade at once. Cutting too much in one go shocks the grass, turns it brown and slows its growth. In peak growing season, that usually means mowing about once a week.
Keep it a little taller
Many people cut their grass too short. Keeping it at about 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 inches) shades the soil, holds moisture and crowds out weeds. Taller grass also copes much better with hot, dry stretches.
Use sharp blades
Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leaving ragged tips that turn brown and invite disease. Professional crews sharpen their blades regularly so every cut is clean.
Change the mowing pattern
Mowing in the same direction every time can flatten the grass and leave ruts. Switching up the pattern helps the grass stand up straight and grow evenly.
Leave short clippings on the lawn
Short clippings break down quickly and return nutrients to the soil. Just make sure they are spread evenly rather than left in clumps, and keep them off driveways and walkways.
Do not mow when it is wet
Wet grass clumps, cuts unevenly and can be damaged by the mower. Waiting for a drier day gives a much better result.
Give your lawn a deep watering once or twice a week instead of a light sprinkle every day. Deep watering encourages stronger roots.
Why a weekly service makes sense
Life gets busy, and it is easy to let the lawn go for two or three weeks. By then it needs a heavy cut that stresses the grass. A weekly service keeps everything on track, so your lawn stays healthy and your weekends stay free.
