Edmonton's growing season is short and our winters can be harsh, so not every plant at the garden centre will survive here. Choosing the right plants from the start saves you money and gives you a landscape that looks good year after year.
Know your hardiness zone
The Edmonton area sits roughly in zone 3 to 4 on Canada's plant hardiness map. Plants rated for zone 3 or colder are the safest choice. You will usually find the rating on the plant tag.
Reliable shrubs
- Lilac. Tough, fragrant and well suited to the Prairies.
- Potentilla. Blooms for months and handles dry spells well.
- Red osier dogwood. Bright red stems add colour all winter.
- Spirea. Compact, easy to care for and great for borders.
Hardy perennials
- Peonies. Long-lived and beautiful, often for decades.
- Daylilies. Almost impossible to kill, with blooms all summer.
- Hostas. Perfect for shady spots.
- Feather reed grass. Adds height and movement, and stands up through winter.
Trees for structure
Evergreens such as spruce and pine provide year-round colour and shelter from the wind. For shade, consider hardy choices like bur oak or Amur maple. Always check the mature size of a tree before planting it close to your house.
Plant smart
- Plant after the last spring frost, usually late May in the Edmonton area.
- Group plants with similar water needs together.
- Use mulch to hold moisture and protect roots over winter.
- Water new plantings deeply until they are established.
